Place of Origin : Salapungan & Pedtad Kabacan, Cotabato

Ethnological Group : Maguindanao

Classification : Festive, royal dance

Background/Context:

The dance originate from among the female grandchildren of the Mantawil Royal House residing in Salapungan & Pedtad Kabacan, Cotabato. This is usually performed during important gatherings of the tribe. It displays another version of Asik dance from among different Muslim groups in Mindanao. This is a solo or couple dance of the Maguindanaon royalty.










Movements/ Steps Particular to the Dance

A. Arm/Wrist

1. Basic Arm/Wrist Movement A.

Starting Pos:

a) Fold arms close to waist, fingers pointing up, palms facing out.
Rotate wrist inward – out (ct. 1, 2); repeat movement, finish fingers pointing toward audience (ct. 3, 4) -------------------------------------

2. Basic Arm/Wrist Movement B.

Starting Pos:


a) Bring both arms in front, R fingers pointing sideward left, palm facing out; L finger doing the reverse pos. of R.
Move both arms to 2nd position and immediately flip fingers to reverse position and repeat same movement going back to original position (ct. 2,); repeat same movements twice (ct. 3, 4) ---------------------------

3. Basic Arm/Wrist Movement C.

Starting Pos:

a) Arms forward at waist level. Movement is done alternately with the R and L wrists.
Rotate R wrist inward – outward clockwise (ct. 1); repeat movement with the L wrist (ct. 2); Repeat some movements with R/L alternately (ct. 3,4) -------------------------------------------------------

Starting Pos:

a) Arms/wrists placed on the lap of dancer, palm facing downward.
Click fingers (middle and thumb fingers) twice, (cts. 1,2,3,4) (clicking on cts, 1 and 3) ---

5. Basic Arm/Wrist Movement E.

Starting Pos:
a) Arms at sides/or on the lap
Raise R(L) hand forward – upward with front part of wrist leading, fingers pointing downward (ct. 1); rotate wrists swiftly inward – outward, finish fingers pointing up (ct. 2) finishing with stretch stiff position. Bring R(L) arms down at sides (ct. 3, 4) -------------------------

Starting Pos:

a) Arms crossed in front of chest; fingers pointing up.
Click R and L fingers (cts. 1, 2, 3, 4); clicking is done at cts. 1 and 3 with thumb and middle fingers and slight shrugging of shoulders. --------

1. Basic Footwork E.
Step R(L) forward(ct. 1) close L(R) to R(L) ct.2 step R(L) forward (ct. 3), point L(R) foot forward. (ct. 4) --------------------------------------------
